A 33-year-old man who was blinded and scarred when his girlfriend threw sulphuric acid over him as he slept has married the carer who nursed him back to health.

Daniel Rotariu and his former carer Anna Catanga, 31, are now husband and wife after tying the knot in Daniel’s home town of Timisoara in Romania.

The couple, who live in Nottingham, met when Anna helped Daniel through rehab at a support centre after his face was dissolved by half a litre of sulphuric acid.

Anna soon quit her job and the pair went on their first date. They have a ten-month-old son, David — whose passport only arrived the day before they left for Romania.

David told the Mirror: ‘After the attack, I never thought this would happen to me but it was wonderful.

‘There were many family and friends who hadn’t seen me since the attack and that was quite emotional.

‘I think some were shocked by how I looked. Some of my relatives started crying.’

Anna’s son Jack, seven, was one of 80 guests.

She said: ‘I felt very excited when I was walking down the aisle, but I only wished that Daniel could see me.

‘I really loved my dress and my hair and make-up, but because he has no vision he’s never known what I look like.

‘But it was really emotional because of everything we’ve been through.’

She had tested the liquid on sausage meat to check it would dissolve human flesh, a court heard.

Former press setter Daniel met Leong in January 2015 when they moved in to a house share in Leicester. She told her new housemate she was 36 — despite being in her 50s — and they began a relationship.

As the acid covered his face he described it feeling ‘like she was throwing hot water’ and says he thought he was dreaming as he woke up to a ‘burning sensation’.

‘My right eye became foggy. Then my other eye left me. Everything went white, like I was surrounded by a very thick fog,’ he added.

Some five weeks later Daniel woke up from a coma at Nottingham City Hospital and felt so low he considered suicide.

But his life changed again when he met Anna. When they developed feelings for each other she quit her job to be with him.

Anna said: ‘I enjoyed his flirting. He was funny, clever and entertaining. I enjoyed his company so much.’

Leong was jailed for life with a minimum 17 years for attempted murder and was ordered to pay Daniel £19,000 in compensation.

Despite everything, Daniel remains upbeat and added: ‘I’ve had the happy ending I never thought was possible.’
