A small plane crashed onto the roof of a shopping center in Southern California on Thursday, killing one and leaving another in critical condition, according to authorities.
An aircraft believed to be a single-engine Cessna 177 crashed onto the roof of a mall in Torrance after it went off a runway at a local airport, federal officials said.
The crash was reported at around 12:15pm at the Rolling Hills Plaza on Crenshaw Boulevard, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The Federal Aviation Administration is now investigating the circumstances of the crash, which took place shortly after the aircraft took off from Torrance Municipal Airport.
The injured person was rushed to a local hospital, according to the Times.
Dozens of firefighters and police were on the scene at the mall after the crash was reported. The mall was quickly evacuated.
There were no injuries on the ground.
The shopping center is home to a number of restaurants, including California Pizza Kitchen and Joe’s Smokin’ BBQ.
Heavy traffic was reported around the area as authorities shut down Crenshaw Boulevard.
